Pilates

Pilates is a comprehensive movement practice that integrates the whole body, encouraging freedom of movement and a reconnection with the body on all levels - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

Here at byGeorge, I welcome all levels from beginners through to the more experienced with each class offering adaptations to meet you where you’re at.

Whether you're looking to build strength, improve posture, enhance flexibility, or simply reconnect with your body, Pilates offers something for everyone, regardless of age or fitness levels.

Breathe | Flow | Connect | Release

I provide classes for everyone regardless of experience or ability in a relaxed, friendly and welcoming environment. I qualified with and am a member of the Pilates Foundation who’s aim is to establish and maintain quality and excellence in Pilates practice and teaching. I have over 20 years of teaching experience.

My classes are a combination of original classical repertoire and principals combined with the more evolved repertoire that’s based on current and up-to-date knowledge and  research on movement practices. I very much prioritise the six main Pilates principles of breath, concentration, control, centre-ing, precision and flow and the connection between them all in each class.

The ethos of byGeorge is to guide you to reach your full potential on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level through Pilates. Our movement and posture can affect how we feel, how we behave, our motivation and energy levels, our concentration, our strength and flexibility, in addition to all the physical processes taking place within the body. Pilates can make beneficial changes in all these areas leading to an improved quality of life.

FAQs

  • Pilates is an exercise system that integrates the whole body and encourages freedom of movement and a reconnection with the body on a physical, mental and spiritual level. It can be performed on spring-assisted apparatus or a mat which often involves the use of small equipment.

Pilates identifies and seeks to address dysfunctional movement and postural patterns and the resulting muscular imbalances. It aims to release tight musculature and tissue which can occur over time due to daily habitual incorrect movement, injury and/or other physical, emotional and mental stresses.

Through elongating and stretching muscles, mobilising joints, increasing strength and core support and improving flexibility and range of movement, pilates re-educates and re-balances the body, specifically the musculo-skeletal structure, allowing it to move with ease, flow and optimum functionality. This release based approach to movement creates a sense of openness, lightness and space and helps you to experience a more thoughtful, versatile way of moving, encouraging you to move from within.

  • Pilates is for everyone regardless of age, gender and fitness levels. Children, men, women, the elderly, pre and post natal women, athletes, dancers and those with sedentary jobs.

  • Comfortable clothing that you can move easily in and bare feet or socks if it’s chilly!

  • A mat and a small hand towel are essential. Small props such as a Pilates soft ball, a theraband and yoga blocks are recommended as they are used regularly throughout the class.

  • It’s a low impact form of movement that can help to improve balance, posture, alignment and breathing capacity, develop bone strength, increase general strength and flexibility, develop and improve core support, develop body awareness and mindful movement, encourage the body to move with a sense of ease and flow, relieve stress and tension, improve overall mood and wellbeing, boost energy levels, improved muscular control and coordination, reduce risk of injury, assist with injury recovery and pain management.
